NFL fines New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick $50,000
Patriots coach Bill Belichick will be penning another check to the NFL offices this week.
The league announced on Wednesday that Belichick was fined $50,000 for “impermissible physical contact with an official” after the Patriots lost to the Ravens in Baltimore Sunday night. Belichick reached out for the referee as he ran across the field following a questionable field goal that gave the Ravens the victory.
“It was inappropriate for me to contact the official,” Belichick said. “I take responsibility for what happened. I accept the discipline and I apologize for the incident.”
On Monday, he maintained that his intent was simply to stop the referee in order to request an official review of the play.
“I have never meant any disrespect or in any way tried to abuse or be disrespectful to the officials and the job that they do,” Belichick said. “I’m trying to get an explanation for obviously an important call, play, in that game. That’s the number one thing between coaches and officials. It’s always at the forefront. It’s just communication of what’s going on, of what’s happening.”
Belichick was not alone in being punished. Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was fined $25,000 for verbally abusing an official after Washington’s loss to the Bengals on Sunday.
