UPDATE: A 41-year-old man faces attempted homicide charges after police said he stabbed a girl in Target and injured several others yesterday.

Leon Raymond Walls, who did not have an address listed in court files, is being held in the Allegheny County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.

Officer Ronald Tardivo wrote in a criminal complaint that he was called to the intersection of Penn Avenue and Penn Circle East shortly after 5:30 p.m. for a report that a man was chasing another man with a baseball bat. While en route, he learned that there was a man inside the Target trying to stab people.

When Officer Tardivo arrived, he saw multiple people bleeding and one of them, Jobe Wright, said Mr. Walls had stabbed him in the arm in the 100 block of Highland Avenue before both of them ran into the store, according to the complaint.

Mr. Wright told police that he and two other men — one of whom had the baseball bat that prompted the police call — chased Mr. Walls into the Target store. Witnesses said Mr. Walls tried to stab one of the men who followed him and, when he missed, grabbed a teenage girl, held her at knifepoint and used her “as a shield,” according to the complaint.

Mr. Walls said, “You come close, I’ll stab her,” and then he stabbed her twice in the back with a kitchen knife or steak knife, according to the complaint.

Police described a chaotic scene in which the men who followed Mr. Walls held him down, sustaining some non-life-threatening wounds themselves, until officers arrived and used pepper spray and a Taser while arresting him.

The girl who was stabbed was taken to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where she was in serious condition Monday night. The three men who were injured were taken to UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside and were in good condition, police said.

In addition to the attempted homicide charges, Mr. Walls faces charges of unlawful restraint, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest and possessing an instrument of crime, the knife.
