Rihanna’s Hairstylist Opens A Salon In Brooklyn

Ursula Stephen is the genius behind the trendsetting asymmetrical cut that helped make Rihanna a style icon, and the renowned hairstylist is bringing her expertise and creative vision to Brooklyn. The Motions Hair ambassador cut the ribbon on her first-ever salon, Ursula Stephen: The Salon last night.

Located at 66 Lafayette Avenue between Elliot and Portland, Ursula Stephen: The Salon represents a new chapter in the storied career of a hairstylist, who has worked with Rihanna, Michelle Williams, Tia and Tamera Mowry, Keyshia Cole and more. She tells Vibe Vixen: “People have been trying to get me to open a salon since I was 17. The location dropped in my lap. I couldn’t say no, and I was ready for my next chapter.”

The chic salon is in Brooklyn’s hip Fort Greene neighborhood. Glamazons Blog reports from the launch last night that the shop notably houses a “wall of fame,” which displays framed magazine covers of Ursula’s work with celebrity clients, including Rihanna and Tia and Tamera Mowry.

Stephen promises she won’t give up her celebrity clients to manage the salon and hints at eventually expanding: “I’m not giving anything up for it,” she told Vixen adding: “I keep saying it’s my first salon, so I guess I’m putting into the universe that I’m going to do more. If it’s in the cards, I’ll roll with it.”

For now, Ursula’s focus is the newest hot spot in Brooklyn, which she wants to attract a diverse clientele. “I want the salon to be versatile,” she told New York Magazine’s The Cut. “I want to see a white girl getting a blowout, and a black girl getting a weave. When I was younger, I didn’t want to work in an all-white salon, but I dreamed of an atmosphere where it was mixed together.”

Ursula says the client’s happiness will be her sole objective, telling Glamazons Blog: “I’m there to help build on what [my clients] know, clear up any myths they’ve heard about, and most importantly, get them the look they want and make sure they leave happy.”
