The U.S. Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg offloads 2,921 pounds of cocaine and 1,300 pounds of marijuana. A wholesale value of $36 million in drug money.

According to media reports, the cocaine and marijuana was seized during a Coast Guard operation on Sept. 27, when a group of suspected drug smugglers were detained off the coast of Honduras.

During the pursuit, the suspected four suspected drug smugglers jumped into the water in an attempt to flee, but they were recovered by a crew from the Resolute. The coast guard officials discovered 53 bales covered in a white powdery substance that later tested positive for cocaine.

The marijuana was seized in a separate incident from a another boat off the Nicaraguan waters.

The interdiction was carried out as part of Operation Martillo.

Which is one component in the government’s approach to countering the use of shorelines in Central America as transshipment routes for illicit drugs, weapons and cash.
